Listening to my own advice

Noel Carroll

A real up and down week this week with some really productive days but also some challenging days which I suppose can be a snapshot of most runners weekly training. As you can see below there’s probably 1 or 2 more rest days and a little less volume than I would like but I’ll go into the rationale behind that in a bit!

Weekly Recap:

Monday: 7 miles – 53.53

Tuesday: 3 miles easy – 10 x 40 secs Hills with Jog back recovery – 2 miles easy

Wednesday: 7 miles 52.46

Thursday: Rest Day

Friday: 2 miles easy – 3 x 1200m 3 x 600m @ Tempo pace with 300 jog recovery – 2 miles easy

Saturday: 7 miles – 53.15

Sunday: Rest Day

Was good to get some power into the legs with some 40 secs hill sprints on the Khyber Pass in Phoenix Park. The profile photo for this Blog shows how challenging of a hill it is but still not too steep therefore allowing me to work on technique and form during these types of sessions! Got the chance to travel home Thursday evening to Shercock and have to say the change of scenery and location did me wonders in terms of my general mood. The old phrase that “a change is as good as a rest” definitely rang true and was nice to be in different surroundings 😊 Took this opportunity to get a session in on the athletics track in Shercock where I’ve done so much of my training on over the years. I remember when it used to be a cinder track and to see the facility it has become now is brilliant to see and I know the committee have more exciting plans to develop the facility even further!

The session itself on Friday also gave me the opportunity to complete a session with my brother Paul. Paul has developed to a stage where we can overlap our sessions and often he can be the one pushing me forward as opposed to the other way around. Although the facility has developed so much over the years one thing that hasn’t changed is that cutting wind facing you coming into the back straight (any past or current Shercock AC athletes reading this will know what I’m talking about). Midway through the session on Friday as we were fighting into a strong headwind I said to myself sarcastically “its good to be home” 😉 All in all though a really solid session!

So what was challenging aspects of last week? Well I’ve developed a bit of tendonitis in my right knee that myself and Dara my physio have been trying to manage over the last month or so. I’ve been able to still get some decent training in during this time through managing both volume and intensity but throughout last week felt as though it was starting to hinder me a bit more than it should. Had a long run planned for yesterday and when I woke up I said to myself if any of the runners I coach asked me what I would advise in this situation I would tell them to take couple of days off and let the issue settle and that you won’t lose any fitness and actually the rest will do you no harm and freshen you up! However although all of the above is true it can be sometimes hard to look at matters in this rational way yourself. But in this case I’m going to heed my own advice and take couple of days off and work on ironing some weaknesses out. I’m actually planning to get a bit of sea swimming in this week to keep me occupied and also do something different. As I said above sometimes “A change is as good as a rest”

Have a great week folks and remember to always heed when the body is trying to tell you something!

Cheers,

Noel
