Not long back from an easy 6 miles in Phoenix Park and my god its glorious out, it would automatically put you in better form my being just outside at the moment 😊 As I mentioned last week wanted to take a few days off to let the knee tendonitis I had developed calm down a bit so took 3 days off completely from running from Sunday through to Tuesday. Spent this time working on some weaknesses and by Wednesday knee had started to feel a bit better. Kept volume and intensity quite low as you can see from recap below:
Weekly Recap:
Monday: Rest Day
Tuesday: Rest Day
Wednesday: 3 miles 23.11
Thursday: 4 miles – 30.38
Friday: 6 miles – 46.31
Saturday: 5 miles – 35.17
Sunday: Rest Day
Had not planned another rest day on Sunday but in truth had probably one too many cans of Guinness at home on Saturday night and suffered with a bit of a sore head yesterday for most of the day and that coupled with a drive back to Dublin left me with absolutely no motivation to train! Had to really ensure that I kept things low in terms of both volume and intensity this week even though there is that temptation to push on. Think the discipline of not pushing things on over the last week is starting to pay off with regards to the knee but not out of the woods yet so going to be completing a similar week this week.
In terms of keeping myself motivated and focused I’ve had to remind myself a lot this week to keeping looking at “the bigger picture”. For me that’s running a fast half and full marathon later this year. So dealing with an injury now, scaling back my training and tipping away with low volume and intensity training for a few weeks in the grand scheme of things is not really a big deal right now and also it’s the right decision. Ploughing on with training would ultimately lead to the issue lingering for longer and postpone dealing with the root cause of the issue. Knowing when to push on and hold back is really important in all sports, it’s a really important character trait of many elite athletes, that ability to make the right decisions under pressure!

Keeping on the theme of looking at the bigger picture and how sometimes its ok to back off for a day or two. My girlfriend Molly had a 3k Time Trial down for this Saturday gone and had planned this for the last few weeks, however on Wednesday she felt a tweak on her calf muscle whilst running. She really wanted to run the 3k on Saturday so we decided to completely rest it on Thursday and Friday and see what it was like Saturday morning. Luckily when she woke up Saturday it had felt a lot better and decided to give the 3k a go running a really positive time and was delighted with the effort. The moral of the story is that by sometimes being proactive and backing off you can still allow yourself to reach your goals by listening to your body and not pushing through pain!
Enjoy the week folks, lets hope this weather lingers around for a while 😊
Cheers for reading,
Noel
