Belfast Marathon Training Week 9

Noel

Hard to believe this is the 50th Blog Post I’ve penned! If you’ve managed to read every single one, fair play for enduring and putting yourself through that 😉

So 3 weeks to go to Belfast Marathon and a solid if not spectacular week of training for me, which is pretty much the story of the last few weeks. I haven’t been able to put in some of the typical sessions I would like in the run up to a marathon due to managing some niggles and injuries. However I have been able to get some decent steady running in and although my speed is probably a bit lacking I feel as though my endurance is in a good place and I feel comfortable at marathon pace!

Weekly Recap:

Monday: 6 miles – 47.18

Tuesday: 7.1 miles – 55.08

Wednesday: 2 miles easy – 10miles @ marathon effort 56.41 (5.40 avg) – 2 miles easy

Thursday: 6 miles – 48.31

Friday: 6 miles – 47.13

Saturday: 22.29 miles – 2.32.40

Sunday: Rest Day

So as per usual, 2 big days of training with the rest used to recover the body and be ready to push on when needed! Wednesday's session was actually really positive. As I said above have had to limit a lot of my sessions to marathon effort so had a nice 10 mile @ Marathon effort on the books for Wednesday. On paper this was a bit daunting but once I got into it felt strong and happy to average 5.40 pace for the 10 miles hitting the below splits:

· 5.43

· 5.39

· 5.31

· 5.35

· 5.46

· 5.47

· 5.37

· 5.44

· 5.43

· 5.37

So a decent session and one that gave me a bit of confidence. Big volume session which rounded up to 14 miles with warm up and cool down. The body was tired for the next 2 days and as you can see by the run completed on Thursday the body had no interest in running fast!

For the long run on Saturday just wanted to get out running steady for around 2 and a half hours without putting any targets on it regarding paces. Enjoyed this one have to say ran it with Paul and the time seemed to fly by. Fuelling went really well on this run so another box ticked in that regard. Body feels a bit tired and battered after it but into he final 3 weeks now and will be putting a lot of emphasis on recovery and ensuring the body is right for marathon day!

One thing I wanted to get across on this blog is not to be greedy in your final few weeks of marathon training in terms of trying to get an extra rep or session in, or even trying to push the pace on because you’re feeling good! Trust the training and what you’ve done to this point. Being fresh on the one day that counts is the goal so don’t take away from this! So for me this week I'll aim to get in a decent session in on Wednesday or Thursday followed by 18 miles or so on Sunday.

Cheers for reading folks and have a great week 😊
